Why NFTs
Empowering museums with NFTs

NFT-enabled digital collectibles present a huge opportunity for cultural institutions to grow revenue, boost engagement, broaden diversity and fuel philanthropy and patronage. Blockchain technology makes the museum NFT possible – Nimi makes it happen. Get in touch to find out how.

Digital Collectibles explained

A digital collectible – enabled by Digital Collectible or ‘non-fungible token’ technology – is a limited edition or exclusive virtual asset. In our case, this is a technological representation of a piece of art that brings innovation in museums.

Slide
How does art
become a Digital Collectible?

A digital image of a physical piece of art can be
minted into a single or multiple Digital Collectibles (as part of a limited series, for example). Each Digital Collectible contains a uniquely identifiable code that makes them a one-of-a-kind that can’t be copied like regular
computer files.

How is Digital Collectible art
collected?

Digital collectibles rely on blockchain technology
which allows verifiable ownership of the specific
digital asset (i.e. a piece of art) to be transferred
from institutions to the collector who purchases it.

Can Digital Collectibles
increase
engagement?

Digital collectibles through Nimi can act as a certificate that grants access to different benefits, providing a form of membership to a collectors’ circle or cultural club. This can create unique engagement opportunities for museums.

What does ‘non-fungible token’ mean?

‘Fungible’ is an asset that can be replicated, so if you swapped it for another, you’d have exactly the same thing, e.g. a postcard of the Mona Lisa. ‘Non-fungible’ is an asset that is unique and cannot be replaced, e.g. the Mona Lisa itself, or edition #17 of a limited series of only 50 copies of a Jackson Pollock. A ‘token’ is the data that is recorded on the blockchain so digital collectibles can be authenticated and ownership verified.

Do more with your collection

On average, up to 98% of collections aren’t on permanent display. NFT enablement empowers innovation in museums; creating value with every single piece of artwork. Digital collectibles aren’t here to replace traditional museum activities or experiences. Instead, they’re an opportunity to showcase collections in innovative and exciting ways, capturing engagement and creating new revenue streams.

Have a question?

We’re always here to help.

We’ve got answers…

The motivation for purchasing a digital collectible can be varied. In the art world, we believe the starting point is a buyer’s passion for art. However, in answering the question of why someone would buy a digital collectible, there are other motivating factors – such as the desire to support a museum like yours. Or it’s the chance to be part of a broader community of like-minded patrons.

Each museum digital collectible involves real and defined sense of ownership for the collector. And by working with Nimi, we can explore various value-add ways for your museum to offer incremental benefits to that collector too, similar to the traditional membership perks and patron benefits that you already have.

An NFT-enabled solution is an art innovation that can help your museum emerge from the traditional boundaries of revenue generation and audience engagement. It can mean more works from your collection can be celebrated at any given time. It can supplement your offline revenue streams. And it can rally patrons behind an important cause or project.

In every instance, we ensure digital collectibles align with your mission and maximize your long-term impact.

Some museums and cultural institutions are hesitant or suspicious about the use of digital collectibles. For some, it’s about works as being unique, individual pieces of cultural heritage. There are also environmental concerns about the production of digital collectibles. By talking to us, however, we’ll help you understand how this can be a beneficial solution to your museum – one that is done safely, sensitively, and sustainably.
